These are the most frequent errors that lead to UK visa refusals and delays — and exactly how to avoid each one.
A UK visa refusal can set you back months and, in some cases, damage future applications. Most refusals are avoidable. Based on feedback from our Visary community, here are the seven mistakes that come up most often — and how to steer clear of them.
This is more common than you might think. For example, applying for a Visitor visa when you intend to work, or applying for a Student visa when your course qualifies under a Short-term Study route. Each visa category has specific eligibility rules and permitted activities. Always read the full route guidance before applying.
Missing a single required document — or providing bank statements that don't cover the required 28-day window — is one of the most common reasons for refusal. Cross-check the official document checklist for your visa type and ensure every figure and date is consistent across your application.
The IHS must be paid in full as part of the online application. If you forget to pay, or if your payment fails, your application cannot proceed. The current IHS rate for a Skilled Worker visa is £1,035 per year (students and children pay less). Use the UKVI IHS calculator to get an exact figure before you apply.
If you're applying on a sponsored route, check that your Certificate of Sponsorship details exactly match your application. A typo in a sponsor licence number, start date, or salary figure is enough to trigger a rejection or a request for further information that delays your decision.
Bank statements must show the required maintenance level (currently £1,270 for most applicants, held for 28 consecutive days) and must end no more than 31 days before the date of application. PDFs downloaded from online banking are accepted — but they must be in the correct format. Statements cut-and-pasted into a document or cropped screenshots are routinely refused.
Applying inside the UK after your existing leave has expired is an overstay — a serious immigration offence. Build in at least 2–3 months lead time before your current visa expires, particularly for complex applications. Visary's reminder system can notify you 90, 60, and 30 days before your visa expiry so you never miss the window.
If you leave the UK while your extension application is pending but your original visa has already expired, you lose the benefit of Section 3C leave and may be refused re-entry. Always seek advice before travelling when an application is in progress.
