UK Visa Processing Times 2025: What to Expect

A practical guide to how long UK visa applications take in 2025 — from visitor visas to Skilled Worker and ILR — and how to speed up your application.

One of the most common questions we hear from Visary users is: how long will my UK visa take? Processing times vary significantly depending on the visa type, where you apply from, and whether you pay for a priority service. This guide breaks down current typical timescales for the most popular visa categories in 2025.

UK Visitor Visa (Standard Visitor)

Applications made from outside the UK are typically decided within 3 weeks when using the standard service. If you apply from within certain countries with a Visa Application Centre (VAC), you may receive a decision faster. Priority and Super Priority services are available at most VACs for an additional fee, reducing the wait to 5 business days or even next business day respectively.

Bear in mind that biometric appointment availability varies by country — build in extra lead time during peak summer and December travel periods.

Skilled Worker Visa

Most Skilled Worker visa decisions are made within 3 weeks from outside the UK (standard service) and within 8 weeks if you are applying to switch to this route from inside the UK. Priority processing from outside the UK typically delivers a decision within 5 business days.

Before applying you will need a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a licensed sponsor employer. The CoS reference number must be entered on the application, and the role must meet the relevant salary threshold — currently £38,700 per year (or the going rate for your occupation code, whichever is higher) for most roles.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Standard processing for ILR takes up to 6 months. The Priority Service costs £500 on top of the main fee and typically results in a decision within 6 months as well — though in practice many Priority decisions come through significantly faster. The Super Priority Service (£800) aims to provide a decision the next working day.

ILR applicants should ensure their continuous residence record is accurate and that any absences from the UK are correctly documented. Even a small clerical error can lead to delays or refusals.
